Diabetes is big business with powerful economic. social and political forces opening and closing doors to our treatments and cures. We have to learn how to redirect these forces to cure diabetes. We are at a turning point in cure-related research with human islet replacement trials underway and a critical mass of technologies with the potential to cure diabetes — but science alone can’t produce the safe, wide-spread, low-cost cure that we aspire to.
The extent of government funding for research and policy initiatives aimed at curing diabetes are a direct function of how effectively we advocate. Rather than portraying our disease as a manageable condition, the world must know the truth about the death and disability caused by diabetes. There needs to be a fundamental shift from our focus on diabetes management. to a focus on curing the underlying disease.
